Pool Closing in Wayne NJ and Across Northern New Jersey

A pool closing that a New Jersey winter actually respects is not a cover thrown over the water. It is a full shutdown of a plumbing system that is about to sit in freezing ground for five months.

Water expands roughly nine percent when it freezes. A single cup left sitting in a return line is enough to split the pipe, and you will not find out until you open in the spring and watch the water level drop. That is the failure we are closing to prevent, and it is why every line gets blown clear and plugged rather than simply drained.

We close pools across Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Essex Counties from early September through late October. Chris does the work himself, so the person who closed your pool is the person who opens it.

What a proper closing includes

• Full line blow out on skimmers, returns, main drain and any water features, then plugged
• Closing chemicals balanced for a long dormant winter, not a summer week
• Equipment winterized — pump drained, filter opened, heater cleared, salt cell pulled and stored
• Cover installed and secured, safety cover or water bag, whatever your pool runs
• Water level lowered to the correct point for your cover type
• Written note of anything failing so you can fix it over the winter instead of in the May rush

Why timing matters more than people think

The right window is after the water holds below sixty five degrees consistently but before the first hard freeze. Close too early in warm water and algae blooms under the cover all autumn, so you open to green. Close too late and you are gambling with a freeze that arrives before the lines are clear.

In North Jersey that window is usually late September into October. It moves every year, which is the honest reason we do not publish a fixed date. Call and we will tell you where the water actually is.

The equipment is what actually gets expensive

A split return line is a repair. A cracked pump housing or a heater with a frozen exchanger is a replacement, and those run into the thousands. Winterizing the pad properly is the cheapest insurance on the whole property.

We drain the pump, open the filter, clear the heater, and pull the salt cell to store it indoors. Pentair, Hayward and Jandy systems are all handled. If something is already on its way out, you get told in the fall, when you have all winter to deal with it, instead of in May when every pool company in the county is booked.

Above ground pools

We focus on in ground pools and do not take above ground closings. Saying that plainly up front saves you a phone call, and it means the pools we do take get the attention they need during a short season.

What a good pool closing actually protects

Every pool closing you pay for should be judged on one question in April: did anything crack. A closing that skipped the blow out looks identical in November and costs thousands in May.
