Pool equipment replacement goes wrong in a predictable way: somebody orders whatever matches the label on the dead unit, installs it, and nobody checks whether that unit was ever right for the pool in the first place.

Plenty of pools in North Jersey are running pumps that were oversized when they went in twenty years ago. Replacing like for like means paying to keep a mistake running. Sizing is the part that decides whether you save money for the next decade or just spend it.

Repair or replace, answered honestly

A motor bearing, a pump lid, a filter o ring or a heater igniter are all repairs and usually worth doing. A cracked pump housing, a leaking filter tank or a heat exchanger that has corroded through are replacements, and putting money into them is throwing it away.

The awkward middle is a unit that is repairable but ancient. We will tell you what the repair costs, what the replacement costs, and roughly how long the old one has left, and then you decide. We do not make that decision for you.

Variable speed pumps and the part nobody explains

A variable speed pump saves real money because power draw does not scale with speed in a straight line. Running at half speed for twice as long moves the same water for a fraction of the electricity.

The catch is that the saving only shows up if the schedule is actually programmed for your pool. A variable speed pump left running flat out is just an expensive single speed pump. We set the schedule as part of the install and explain what it is doing.

Sizing a filter so you stop cleaning it

An undersized filter is the most common complaint we hear that nobody realises is a sizing problem. If your filter needs cleaning every two weeks in season, it is probably too small for the pool and the debris load, not faulty.

Going up a size costs slightly more once and gives you longer runs between cleans for the entire life of the unit.

What good pool equipment replacement gets right that a like for like swap does not

Proper pool equipment replacement starts by measuring the pool and the plumbing rather than reading the sticker on the dead unit. Pipe size, turnover volume, head loss and how the pad is arranged all decide what belongs there. Matching the old label just inherits whatever mistake was made the last time.
