Pool Opening in Wayne NJ, Booked Before The Spring Rush

A pool opening families are actually happy with comes down to one thing: whether the water is genuinely swimmable when we leave, or whether it just looks less green than it did.

The pool has sat under a cover for five months. There is debris on the cover, cold stale water underneath, equipment that has not run since October, and chemistry that is nowhere near balanced. Opening it is reassembly plus recovery, not just pulling a cover off.

We open across Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Essex Counties starting in April. The earlier slots go first, and they are the good ones.

What an opening includes

• Cover removed, cleaned and stored so it is dry and usable again next fall
• Plugs pulled and equipment reassembled — pump, filter, heater, salt cell all back in and running
• Full system start up with a check for leaks, airlocks and pressure problems
• Water tested and balanced — pH, alkalinity, chlorine, calcium hardness and stabilizer
• Filter cleaned and the system run until it is actually circulating properly
• Honest assessment of anything that did not survive the winter

Open early, not on the first hot day

The instinct is to wait until you want to swim. The problem is that everyone has the same instinct, so the calendar compresses into two weeks and the water gets no time to recover.

Opening in April gives the chemistry a few weeks to come around before you actually want to use it. It also means algae that started under the cover gets caught early, while it is still a chemical problem instead of a scrubbing problem.

What we find most often

Cracked plugs and split fittings from a closing that was done in a hurry. Salt cells that were left outside all winter. Filters that were never cleaned before they were shut down. Heaters that will not fire.

None of that is unusual and none of it is a disaster if it is found in April. It becomes a disaster when it is found on the first ninety degree Saturday in June.

A pool opening you are happy with is judged on whether the water is swimmable, not on whether the cover came off. Reassembly is the easy half. Getting cold, stale, five month old water back to balanced is the part that takes knowing what you are doing.
