The overwhelming majority of split lines we repair in North Jersey come from a closing where the blow out was rushed or skipped. Water sits in the line, freezes, expands, and splits the pipe underground where nobody sees it until spring.

Why unions matter and most pads do not have them

A lot of equipment pads are glued solid, pipe straight into pump straight into filter with no unions. It works until something needs replacing, and then a twenty minute swap becomes a cutting and repiping job.

When we repipe a pad we put unions in on purpose. It costs slightly more now and saves real money every time a pump or heater gets changed for the next twenty years.

Flow problems that are not leaks

A pump that loses prime, whines, or spits air is usually pulling air in on the suction side rather than losing water. Common causes are a low water level, a cracked pump lid, a dry lid o ring, or a skimmer line that is partly blocked.

None of those need digging. All of them get checked before anyone suggests excavation.

How a pool plumbing repair should be sequenced

A good pool plumbing repair is sequenced cheapest test first. Rule out evaporation, then check the pad, then pressure test the lines, and only then talk about opening the ground. Any company that leads with excavation before it has ruled out a ten dollar o ring is guessing with your money.
